Very Old Gringo

While Columbia’s “Old Gringo” takes its sweet time opening domestically, it’s already playing to audiences South of the Border--and beyond.

Set against the Mexican Revolution, the $24-million romantic epic stars Jane Fonda, Gregory Peck and Jimmy Smits. It had its world premiere in Buenos Aires last weekend--and opens throughout Argentina on Thursday. It opens mid-September in Mexico City, where it was screened with subtitles last week for the press and industry leaders at Cineteca (similar to American Film Institute). According to insiders, the purpose of the Cineteca event--attended by Fonda and director Luis Puenzo--was to smooth the still-ruffled feathers of those in Mexico who resented the selection of Argentina’s Puenzo to direct a movie about their country.

“Old Gringo” next opens in West Germany on Oct. 5.

The next day, it finally opens in the United States. It was originally due last Christmas.
