NATION : Spending by States on AIDS Rises; California Tops List at $77 Million
State spending on AIDS increased by almost $100 million to more than $250 million during fiscal 1989, with California topping the list at $77 million, a new study showed today.
The report by George Washington University found that about $500 million in non-Medicaid funds were spent to prevent and treat AIDS at the state level this fiscal year. About half of that money came from state governments, and the federal government kicked in the remainder.
The number of states that did not allocate any general revenues for the battle against acquired immune deficiency syndrome fell from 14 in fiscal 1988 to eight in fiscal 1989. First-time contributors included Louisiana and South Carolina.
