Long Beach : Battleship Missouri to Be Open for Tours on 2 Days

The historic battleship Missouri will be open to the public Sunday and Monday at the U.S. Naval Station in Long Beach, marking the start of a new policy of making military ships available to the public two weekends a month, Navy officials said.
It was aboard the Missouri that the Japanese government surrendered on Sept. 2, 1945, ending World War II. A bronze plaque was recently dedicated marking the spot on the deck where the signing ceremony took place.
The Missouri, one of four Iowa-class battleships recommissioned under former President Reagan’s naval buildup, will be open for visitors from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday. Visitors should enter the Navy base at Gate 5 to reach the ship on Pier E on Terminal Island. Admission is free.
Other ships will be open for tours on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, starting with the replenishment oiler Roanoke on Sept. 23, a Navy spokesman said.
