Amnesty International estimated that at least 1,000 people were killed when Chinese security forces moved against demonstrators in Beijing from June 3 to June 9, and that at least 300 others were killed in the city of Chengdu. The Chinese government said 200 died during the unrest. A report by the London-based human rights organization cited scores of firsthand accounts of the killings as troops moved toward Beijing’s Tian An Men Square. Amnesty International said it has appealed to Premier Li Peng for the release of “prisoners of conscience” and for fair trials of those facing political charges.
