District of Columbia Mayor Marion Barry, reacting to allegations that he smoked crack with Charles Lewis, denied ever using illegal drugs, suggested that federal authorities coerced statements from Lewis and accused federal authorities of leaking the information to try to “assassinate my character.” U.S. Atty. Jay B. Stephens asked the Justice Department to investigate disclosures that Lewis told federal authorities two weeks ago that he and Barry smoked crack at the downtown Washington Ramada Inn on several occasions last December and used cocaine together in the Virgin Islands.
