NEW DELHI —
India awarded Palestine Liberation Organization chief Yasser Arafat its top award Friday for promoting international understanding and good will.
A government spokesman said that in naming Arafat for the Jawaharlal Nehru award, India was underlining its commitment to the right of all people to fight for freedom.
The award, which carries a cash prize of $93,750, is named after India’s first post-independence leader, who fought for India’s freedom from British rule.
