A San Diego cabdriver died early Sunday after his cab struck a vehicle on the shoulder of Interstate 5, authorities said.
Louie Jack Parker, 53, of the 700 block of 11th Avenue, died at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla at 8:15 a.m., an hour after the crash north of Leucadia Boulevard, Deputy Coroner George Dickason said.
Two passengers were riding in the cab when it veered out of control while going an estimated 80 m.p.h. and hit a pickup parked along the shoulder, said Mike Collier, a dispatcher for the California Highway Patrol.
Jesus Gutierrez, 19, was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition Sunday afternoon. Soloman Modano, 45, was listed in fair condition at Sharp Memorial. The driver and a passenger in the parked pickup escaped with minor injuries, Collier said.
