The county chapter of the American Institute of Architects has selected a panel of judges for its Oct. 1 sandcastle competition that will include Supervisor Thomas F. Riley, Newport Harbor Art Museum director Kevin Consey and Los Angeles Times architecture critic Sam Hall Kaplan.

OCCAIA officials said the public event is intended to raise money for the organization and “the level of architectural awareness in Orange County.” It is scheduled to be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The other judges selected for the event include architects Ron Yeo, Herb Brownell and David Klages; Josie DeFalla, associate director of the Bowers Museum; Gifford Myers, professor of art at UC Irvine, and artist Eileen Cowin.

John McMurray, president of OCCAIA, said: “Because of the many professional sculptors entered in the competition, the (judges) will have a tough time selecting just one first-place winner.”
