A 900-pound baby sperm whale that washed up on a Galveston beach during the weekend became stronger Monday, but officials at Sea Arama Marineworld remained pessimistic about its chances for survival.

The 13-foot-long whale, named “Odie” by the marine staff, was kept on the beach in hopes its mother would return, but was taken to Sea Arama when she did not, said park spokeswoman Christy Benson.

“He’s doing pretty well right now, as best we can tell,” Benson said. “There are no outward signs of anything wrong. We’re working on feeding him and keeping him nourished.”

Benson said that even though the whale had lasted 36 hours in captivity, the odds are against his survival.
