A 3-year-old boy was in critical condition today after he fell from a fourth-floor window of an apartment complex in Santa Ana.

Police said it appears that Jose Martinez accidentally slipped through the window and plummeted to the pavement while his mother, Delphina, was in the bathroom.

The mother was in the process of moving into the apartment at 610 N. Garfield St. on Tuesday afternoon and was waiting with Jose and his brother for a utility serviceman when the accident occurred, according to Santa Ana Police Cpl. Charles Jarusek.

Shortly before 6 p.m., the woman left Jose unattended in the living room while she went to the bathroom, Jarusek said. When she returned, she noticed her child was gone and the screen was off the window. She looked out to discover Jose sprawled on the ground far below, police said.

Jarusek said the windowsill is less than two feet from the floor.

Paramedics rushed Jose to the trauma unit at Western Medical Center.
