Owner George Steinbrenner and outfielder Dave Winfield of the New York Yankees settled their lawsuit, with Winfield admitting that his charitable foundation had misspent contributions.
Steinbrenner agreed to pay the David M. Winfield Foundation $600,000 that had been put in escrow, and Winfield agreed to make $229,667 in delinquent payments to the foundation. In addition, Winfield agreed to pay the foundation “$30,000 in reimbursement for certain moneys inappropriately expended by the foundation.”
