2 Groups Ask Repeal of Sign Ordinance

A Temple City ordinance requiring at least half of a business sign to be in the Roman alphabet is being challenged by two civil rights law groups in Los Angeles.

In a letter delivered Wednesday to city officials, the Asian Pacific American Legal Center of Southern California and the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California asked the City Council to rescind the language requirement in its 1985 sign ordinance, said Kathryn Imahara, an attorney for the Asian legal center.

She said the request is based on a July 14 court decision that a Pomona ordinance requiring English characters on business signs was unconstitutional. Arcadia, Rosemead and San Gabriel, which have similar language requirements in their sign ordinances, may also be challenged, Imahara said.

Karl Koski, city manager of Temple City, said enforcement of the ordinance had been suspended while the Pomona case is being appealed.
