‘Rethinking School Choice’

Share

I agree with the points made in the Op-Ed article “Rethinking the School Choice Issue,” by Teresa P. Hughes (Aug. 16). Allowing parents and children to choose where they can go to school will necessitate that schools improve to attract and retain students. This freedom should also encourage parents to participate more actively in their child’s education. It’s a wonderful idea that can be very successful, especially in a school district the size of East Harlem.

However, bringing open enrollment to a district with the students and area of Los Angeles Unified School District would not only be chaotic, but also unfair. Schools should first be able to develop and maintain their own distinct programs before competing for students. The recently adopted school-based management plan will help foster school uniqueness and, once it becomes rooted, will allow open enrollment to become a reality.
