There are more than 480,000 dogs in the city of Los Angeles, the Department of Animal Regulation estimates. From July, 1988, through June, 1989, the department licensed 200,000 dogs and 1,701 equine, 99% of them horses. As of August, the department recorded 2,224 horses, 11 burros and six mules in the city. Cats are not licensed and no firm population estimates exist.
