The World : Glemp Delays Trip to U.S.
Cardinal Jozef Glemp, Poland’s Roman Catholic primate, said in a statement issued in Warsaw that he is postponing a trip to the United States due to the “unfavorable” controversy over the Carmelite convent at the former Nazi Auschwitz death camp. Glemp had intended to visit Chicago, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Detroit, Washington and Boston beginning Sept. 21. Glemp has been at the center of a dispute over the presence of Carmelite nuns at the site of the camp. The nuns were to have been moved from the site by last Feb. 22 under a 1987 agreement between Catholic and Jewish leaders, but the deadline was not met. Glemp has angered Jewish groups and others over his comments in the controversy, including his call for renegotiation of the agreement.
