Most U.S. Rental Stock in Smaller Structures
An economist for the National Apartment Assn. says that “only 28% of the nation’s rental housing stock is in structures with 10 or more units.”
He cites the 1985 American Housing Survey conducted by the Census Bureau which shows that 10.9 million units, nearly one-third of the rental housing stock, are single-family detached homes or townhouses and that another 8.9 million units, nearly one-fourth of the rental housing, are two- to four-unit structures.
