A 25-year-old man was shot to death Sunday after the driver of the car he was in traded words with two men in another vehicle, Los Angeles police said.

The car in which the victim was riding was traveling north on Denker Avenue near 50th Street when the driver thought he recognized the occupants of another car, Officer Michael Henderson said.

At the intersection of Denker and 50th Street, the driver of the first car pulled alongside a red Ford and “stopped to say something,” Henderson said.

After a brief verbal exchange, “the driver of the (Ford) suddenly produced a hand gun and fired several shots--one of which hit the victim in the upper torso,” Henderson said.

The victim was taken to Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, police said.

His name is being withheld until his family is notified, police said.

By late Sunday, no arrests had been made. The motive for the killing had yet to be determined, Henderson said.
