A suspect in the hit-run traffic accident that killed former child kidnap victim Steven Stayner surrendered at the Mexican border, authorities reported. An intense search had been conducted for Antonio Loera, 28, since Saturday’s accident when a car he reportedly was driving pulled out of a driveway into the path of Stayner’s motorcycle. Loera, identified by friends as the motorist, disappeared, leaving his wife and children behind. California Highway Patrol spokesman Tom Sawyer said the break came when the suspect’s wife contacted Augie Provencio, a retired Merced police community services officer who acts as a liaison between Latinos and law enforcement in Merced. Provencio talked by telephone with Loera, who had gone to Mexico, and they set up a meeting at San Ysidro.
