Veteran Indy car driver David (Salt) Walther walked away from a crash during testing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Walther, a veteran of seven Indianapolis 500s, slammed into the wall between Turns 1 and 2 Tuesday while driving a 1986 March-Cosworth. The right side of the car, which had been purchased from Roger Penske, sustained extensive damage, including a hole in the tub, officials said.

Walther, 41, had reached speeds of 192 m.p.h. during the tests. Although he was limping after the accident, he declined medical attention, officials said.

Walther, who is a native of Dayton, Ohio, has not raced at Indianapolis since he finished 12th in 1979. This summer, he has competed as a part-time driver on the American Racing Series.
