Other Stations Move to Fill Classical Void

As radio station KFAC-FM wound down operations before switching Wednesday from classical music to rock, listeners were getting all manner of clues as to where to transfer their loyalties.

This week, San Diego classical station KFSD-FM (94.1) chimed in with an ad on KFAC, touting itself as “Classical music for San Diego-- and now for Orange County.”

KFSD broadcasts classical music 24 hours a day, according to general manager Nancy Reynolds, who said its 100,000-watt signal can be heard “loud and clear” in southern Orange County and along coastal cities as far north as Malibu. The 65-year-old commercial station reaches 160,000 listeners a week and is in “great financial shape,” Reynolds said.

Classical music can also be heard on two Los Angeles stations, KUSC-FM (91.5) and KKGO-FM (105.1), though the strength of these signals also varies.
