A Fontana man was killed early today when his motorcycle struck an abandoned vehicle with its lights off in the car-pool lane of the northbound 55 Freeway in Orange, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

About 12:30 a.m., Charles Edward Earl, 40, was driving a Honda motorcycle in the car-pool lane at 60 to 65 m.p.h. and apparently did not see the abandoned Audi 4000, south of Taft Avenue, CHP Officer Keith Thornhill said.

“He struck it in the rear causing him to be ejected from the bike, landing face first,” Thornhill said, adding that Earl died at the scene.

Another motorist suffered minor injuries when his vehicle, traveling in the freeway’s fast lane, struck the motorcycle, Thornhill said. Edward Eugene Wyant, 32, of San Bernardino was transported to Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Anaheim.
