More than 7,000 tons of U.S.-donated food has arrived in Lebanon to feed needy families throughout the country, it was announced Friday.

The Agency for International Development said the food arrived by ship at the northern port of Tripoli and will be distributed by Save the Children, a relief organization based in Connecticut.

The food consists of rice, lentils and vegetable oil. During heavy fighting over the past several months, the relief group has distributed rations to about a third of the population of Lebanon, the announcement said.
