Simpson Advances at Senior Amateur

Joe Simpson of San Diego advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Senior Amateur golf tournament Friday in Houston.

Simpson, who was a semifinalist at last year’s Senior Amateur, parred the first 12 holes of his match against Warren Jones of San Mateo, Calif., en route to a 3 and 2 win. Simpson led after 12 holes, 3 up, then lost the 13th with his only bogey of the day before ending the match with three pars.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Jason Brown had four goals and Jason Vance and Peter McConville added three goals apiece as UC San Diego defeated Brown, 13-5, in the Brown University Invitational in Providence, R.I.

UCSD (6-5), ranked No. 9 in the NCAA Open Division, plays No. 10 Navy today.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

UC San Diego continued its flawless season with a 7-0 victory at Occidental.

UCSD (6-0) has outscored its opponents, 32-0. Heather Mauro led the way against Occidental with four goals--three assisted by Teresa Schwaar. Karin Lindsay added two goals.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

San Diego State forced No. 1 Hawaii to a five-game set before falling 15-10, 15-5, 7-15, 12-15, 15-9 in a Big West Conference match at SDSU. Hawaii (7-0, 1-0) pulled to a 14-4 lead in the fifth set, but No. 19 SDSU (9-6, 1-1) rallied to pull within 14-9.

Tee Williams-Sanders led Hawaii with 28 kills and 14 digs. Jennifer Miller had 19 kills, Amy Erben 17 kills and 17 digs, and Shannon Mathew 18 kills for SDSU. SDSU plays Hawaii again on Monday at 8 p.m. at Peterson Gym.

Christian Heritage, in its first season, won its first match against a four-year school defeating Southwestern Baptist Bible College, 15-4, 15-4, 16-14. Setter Jennie Zura had 15 assists and Melanie Barringer six kills for the Hawks (2-4).

Liz Villanueva had seven kills to lead Point Loma Nazarene College to a 15-4, 9-15, 17-15, 15-6 victory over Christ College Irvine in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener at PLNC. The Crusaders are 1-0, 7-1. Christ College Irvine is 0-1, 3-3.

UC San Diego is seeded fourth going into today’s quarterfinals at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. In pool play, UCSD went 2-1, losing its final match to Incarnate Word (Tex.) 15-8, 14-16, 8-15. UCSD previously defeated Pomona Pitzer, 15-12, 15-10, and Whittier, 15-4, 15-4. On the day, Elizabeth Tan had 19 kills and Diana Klintworth had 18 for UCSD (10-7).

RUNNING

The 35th Balboa eight-miler will be held today, starting at 7 a.m. Registration for the race, which begins at the Federal building, is $10. A three-mile fun run, which costs $4, will also be held.

BASKETBALL

The Holiday Bowl is sponsoring a three-on-three basketball tournament Oct. 14-15 at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. Divisions will be offered for men, women and juniors. Registration forms are available at any participating Jack in the Box restaurant or by calling the Holiday Bowl office at 283-5808.
