Community College Roundup : Orange Coast Pair Runs Past Saddleback

Chris Parmer nosed ahead of teammate Eric Anderson to win, leading Orange Coast College past Saddleback, 20-41, Friday in an Orange Empire Conference cross-county meet at Irvine Regional Park.

Palmer and Anderson both were timed in 22 minutes. Sean Douglas of Saddleback was third at 22:09.

In an Orange Empire Conference women’s cross-country meet, Mari Benavides of Orange Coast won in 20:24 to lead Orange Coast to a 17-44 victory over Saddleback. Orange Coast’s Lisa Rutkowski was second (21:12) and teammate Chelsea Seibert was third (21:23). Saddleback’s Corina Weiler (21:47) was fourth.

In other Orange Empire men’s meets:

Rancho Santiago men’s team defeated Fullerton, 25-32, but lost to Riverside, 24-34, in a four-mile event at Irvine Regional Park.

Mario Oceguera of Riverside won the race with a time of 20:51. Roger Nava of Rancho Santiago was second at 21.09 and teammate Luis Alvarado was fourth at 21.21.

At Craig Park in Fullerton, Golden West’s men defeated Cypress, 15-50.

Golden West’s John Ehrke won the four-mile race in 24:22. Golden West had the top three finishers with Mike Hamilton second (24:31) and Jim Nielsen (25:20) third.

Cypress only had two runners in the race and John Thomas finished fourth (25:52).

In South Coast Conference women’s soccer:

Orange Coast 5, Oxnard 1--Cheryl Jesse and Michelle Forgette each scored twice to lead Orange Coast (4-2-2, 2-0) at home. Renee Cano also scored for Orange Coast.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Cypress 2, L.A. Harbor 2--Cypress’ Hugo Leon scored 42 minutes into the first half to tie the score, 1-1, and Paco Jimenez scored two minutes into the second half to tie the score, 2-2. Cypress is 1-3-1. Los Angeles Harbor is 0-0-1.

East Los Angeles 4, Golden West 0--Juan Malta scored twice to lead East Los Angeles at Golden West. Golden West is 0-7.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Glendale Arizona 3, Cypress 0--Glendale won, 15-11, 15-12, 15-7, at Cypress. Shelly Grimm led Cypress (7-4) with 11 kills, and Cypress (3-1) was led by Kari Calliham , who had 10 kills.

Fullerton 3, Utah Dixie 2--Christy Richmond had 13 kills to lead Fullerton (3-0) to a 15-11, 8-15, 15-4, 8-15, 15-6, victory at home. July Jones had 24 service winners and three aces.

In the San Diego Mesa water polo tournament:

Golden West 24, San Bernardino 4--Henry Rabello scored three goals to lead Golden West (11-1). Friday morning, Golden West defeated Grossmont 17-4, with five goals by Rabello.
