Records were set on both ends of the thermometer, with cold in Texas, the plains and the Appalachians and sizzling heat in Florida and Washington. Fayetteville, Ark., and Springfield, Mo., had their earliest freezes ever. Midland, Tex., with 36, broke its record low temperature for September.
