Parents in at least 90% of Utah’s school districts were urged to keep their children home today in the face of a statewide strike by teachers angered because the Legislature voted a tax cut last week instead of diverting money from a $94-million state surplus to education. Jim Campbell, president of the Utah Education Assn., said the strategy for a boycott appeared “as far as possible, under control. It’s going to be a one-day protest against the Legislature . . . and then we’ll be back in school on Tuesday.” Utah teachers would join striking teachers in Illinois, Montana, New Jersey, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Most of the walkouts are over wages and such issues as classroom size and teacher autonomy.
