San Jose a Tokyo ‘Getaway’: The Transportation Department designated San Jose a gateway city, making it eligible as a point of origin for nonstop airline service to Japan. American Airlines, which is seeking permission to fly the San Jose-Tokyo route, sought the designation. Competing with American are Delta Air Lines, Continental Airlines and Northwest Airlines; they want permission for a nonstop Honolulu-Tokyo route. The department will chose one airline for new Tokyo service.
