A Senate panel approved a bill eliminating $50 million in reparations next year for Japanese-Americans interned during World War II but agreed on a plan to pay them in future years. The House had voted to provide $50 million, but the Senate Appropriations Committee stripped this from a bill providing funds for the State, Justice and Commerce departments. Instead, the committee said that up to $500 million could be provided next year and in subsequent years as an entitlement program, making it immune from cuts.
