Olivares Has Surgery for Broken Ankle After Spill at Fairplex; Out 3 Months
Jockey Frank Olivares, who broke his right ankle in a spill Tuesday at Fairplex Park in Pomona, had surgery Wednesday and is expected to be out for about three months.
Olivares was injured in the eighth race when his mount, Zaida’s Best Man, was unable to avoid Steffi’s Eagle, who went down in the middle of the clubhouse turn after clipping the heels of another horse.
Corey Black, the rider on Steffi’s Eagle, suffered multiple bruises. Olivares and Black were treated at a hospital and released.
Olivares then underwent 90-minute surgery at Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood Wednesday. The jockey will wear a cast for three to six weeks and then undergo therapy.
Dr. Robert Chandler, who performed the surgery, said two screws were used to help repair the ankle.
