THE SIDELINES : Belgian Widens Tour of Ireland Lead
Eric Vanderaerden of Belgium registered his second consecutive stage victory today and increased his overall lead in the Tour of Ireland cycling race.
Vanderaerden was timed in 5 hours, 13 minutes, 37 seconds, for the 202-kilometer stage from Shannon to Cork.
Virtually the entire field was clocked in the same time. Second place went to Marcel Arntz of The Netherlands, with 1987 Tour de France winner Sean Kelly of Ireland third despite a fall during a hill climb.
Kelly was second overall, nine seconds behind Vanderaerden’s leading time of 14:11.05. Arntz was third, 15 seconds behind the leader.
Vanderaerden led by one second at the start of the day. The race ends Sunday in Dublin.
