From Times wire services
ALBANY, N.Y. —
Sen. Alfonse M. D’Amato (R-N.Y.) said today that he will not seek the 1990 Republican gubernatorial nomination for New York.
D’Amato made the announcement during his weekly news conference with several New York radio stations.
“Let me be clear on that. . . . I am not going to be a candidate for governor if Gov. (Mario) Cuomo runs and I will not be a candidate if Gov. Cuomo does not run,” D’Amato said. “I will not be a candidate.”
D’Amato said he prefers the challenge of the Senate.
