A Van Nuys woman was struck and killed by a car Friday as she stepped off a curb at a Kester Avenue crosswalk, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.

The woman, who was in her late 50s, died at Sherman Oaks Community Hospital about 30 minutes after the 7:05 p.m. accident in the 5400 block of Kester Avenue in Van Nuys, Sgt. Ray Lombardo said. Her name was withheld until relatives could be notified.

The woman was hit by a car driven by a Van Nuys man in his early 30s as she began to cross Kester in the crosswalk, which did not have a stop sign or a traffic light, Lombardo said. The car, traveling south on Kester, was changing lanes to pass another car making a left turn when it hit the woman in the far right lane, he said. The driver’s name was not immediately available.

The car did not appear to be speeding, Lombardo said, and the driver was not cited, pending an investigation.
