Conservative GOP Unit Moves to Exclude Gays

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. — Groups organized on the basis of sexual preference would be banned from the state Republican Party under a resolution unanimously adopted here Sunday by the board of the California Republican Assembly, a conservative volunteer group.
The proposed amendment to the party’s bylaws, aimed at ousting homosexuals, is similar to one that failed to pass at the biennial state GOP conference last month.
“There was a feeling of course at the California Republican Party meeting they did not have the opportunity to (impose a ban), and they would like to have the opportunity to do that at the next one,” said board President Bill Hogue.
If the GOP passes a measure based on this resolution, it could affect openly homosexual Republican groups, such as the Log Cabin Republican clubs, around the state.
