From Times Staff and wire service reports

A young man was shot and killed early today by an Anaheim police officer in the back yard of a house after a foot chase through the neighborhood, police said.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was shot after he allegedly tried to grab the officer’s handgun, said Police Lt. Marc Hedgepeth.

The shooting occurred about 1:25 a.m. after two Anaheim officers watching for drug dealing in the 700 block of West Hall Street noticed a man acting suspiciously and confronted him. The man ran and officers chased him several blocks to the corner of Romneya Drive and Ralston Street, Hedgepeth said.

Officers reached the man as he tried to climb a fence to the rear yard of a house. There, the man grabbed the butt of one officer’s handgun in its holster, while the other officer struck the man with a night stick.

The officer whose gun had been grabbed pulled loose, and when the man appeared to try to grab the gun again, he opened fire.

Hedgepeth said drugs were found on the man but would provide no further details.

The man died at the scene. The shooting is being investigated by Anaheim police and the Orange County district attorney’s office.
