BUENA PARK : Delay in Arts Facility Site Choice Protested
Frustrated with the City Council’s delay in naming a site for a proposed Cultural Arts Facility, the Buena Park Fine Arts Commission will file a formal protest with the city.
Meeting Monday night, members of the arts commission and the Cultural Arts Foundation unanimously passed a motion to draft a letter to the city expressing their disappointment in the council’s inaction.
In October, 1988, the city hired a team of architects to prepare a master plan for a civic and cultural arts center at two possible sites, the Civic Center at 6650 Beach Blvd. and the Recreation and Community Services Center at 8150 Knott Ave.
According to the arts commission, almost $98,000 has been paid to outside architects and other firms for a preliminary study, which resulted in a report listing the pros and cons of each site. The project came to a standstill when the City Council was unable to choose between the sites. Financing is also undecided.
“We thought after 10 years we were finally going to get our cultural center, and now it’s like starting all over,” said one commission member.
The proposed center would be a site for plays and concerts as well as other Buena Park events.
