At the urging of about 50 high school students and parents, the City Council has moved a step closer to installing a crosswalk and signal on Cerritos Avenue in front of a local school.
The council Monday voted 3 to 0 to approve a work schedule for the installation of the crosswalk and signal in front of Los Alamitos High School.
Final approval of the proposal will be considered at the council’s budget review session in early January.
Discussions about the signal have centered on safety, but students and parents expressed frustration over the daily traffic jams.
” . . . It seems like every year it gets worse,” senior class president Shelly Hemphill said. “Now it’s gotten really bad. It took me 30 minutes to get to school the other day on a normal five-minute drive. Just trying to turn into the parking lot takes me 15 minutes.”
Others talked of the circuitous routes they take to avoid traffic.
The work schedule calls for construction to begin on or around July 9 and completion of the project by Aug. 31.
