Asenior at North Hollywood High School has been awarded the President’s Environmental Youth Award for a recycling project that was initially rejected by the Los Angeles school board.

Allen W. Graves is one of 10 students nationwide to be honored with the award, Environmental Protection Agency spokeswoman Carrie Frieber announced Tuesday.

Graves “is to be congratulated for his determination in winning approval of his school district board to establish a financially successful, long-term recyling project, and a plan for gathering, storing and disposing of waste materials at his high school and in the community,” said EPA regional administrator Daniel McGovern.

President Bush will present the awards next month at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., attended by the recipients, Frieber said.

The award recognizes Graves’ efforts to establish the North Hollywood High School Environmental Conservation Corps, which the Los Angeles Board of Education first rejected because of a district policy against long-term recycling programs at schools, Frieber said. The board later changed the policy to allow Graves’ project, in which students collect trash for hauling to a recycling plant, she said.

Graves plans to study to become an environmental lawyer, Frieber said.
