The International Committee of the Los Angeles Philharmonic with its yearly Festival Fly-Away raffle, which continued throughout the Hollywood Bowl season, netted $116,000. All proceeds go to the Philharmonic Orchestra for its outreach programs (including inner-city school music education) in Southern California. Committee president Rabab Kulay and Gertilda Voss Conti chaired.

The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Institute of Wine & Food held an Arabian Nights’ Dinner on Sept. 18 at the Al Amir restaurant. Antoinette and Peter George of Al Amir underwrote the event, which netted $18,000, benefiting the Lois Dwan Culinary Scholarship Fund.

The Fifth Annual Celebrity Rib-Eating Contest on Sept. 24 at Tony Roma’s restaurant, Universal City, netted $20,000. Proceeds will go to the Starlight Foundation of Southern California, which grants wishes to critically, chronically and terminally ill children. The winning celebrity team, calling themselves “Comic Rib-Lief,” were Monty Hoffman, Bill Fox, Tom McTique, Al Clethan and Gregg Goldman.

The Doheny Eye Institute’s Fourth Vision Award Dinner Dance on Sept. 27 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel honored Dr. Simon Ramo, co-founder of TRW Inc. Net proceeds totaling $93,000 will be used to continue to support vision research projects at the institute. Sid Webb chaired the event. Mary Crary, Jr., Carolyn Singleton and Betty Williams composed the dinner committee.

The Beverly Hills Hadassah’s Advance Gifts Dinner Dance was held Sept. 27 at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Former Vice President Walter F. Mondale was guest speaker, and actress Jane Seymour was honored with the 1989 “Wall of Healing Award.” The event netted $500,000 for the Medical Center-Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem and the Medical Center in Kiryat Hadassah, Ein Karem. Susan Levich, Dorothy Salkin, Jean Habelson and June Hamlin were event chairwomen.

Coupons of Hope, the co-operative couponing program that benefits the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, has raised $1,024,000 to date for 1989. The program, which started 10 years ago, has benefited City of Hope by $8 million since its inception and celebrated its 10th anniversary with a luncheon Oct. 5 at the Sheraton Industry Hills Hotel. Half a million coupon books will be distributed free to consumers in supermarkets, beginning Nov. 2.
