From Times staff and wire reports

The federal government announced it had reached a settlement with the National Lawyers Guild in a $56-million lawsuit alleging the FBI and other federal agencies illegally monitored the group on suspicion it was a communist organization. The surveillance of the guild from 1940 to 1975 amassed over 1 million pages of FBI files. Under the agreement, which must be approved by a federal court, the FBI has agreed to restrict use of those files before turning them over to the National Archives and Records Service. The guild has agreed to drop its suit.
