TENNIS ROUNDUP : McEnroe, Connors Struggle but Pick Up Wins in France

John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors both struggled Thursday before advancing to the quarterfinals of the $255,000 Toulouse Grand Prix tennis tournament at Toulouse, France.

Connors, seeded second, was forced to a third-set tiebreaker to beat West Germany’s Udo Riglewski, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).

McEnroe, top seeded, downed Ramesh Krishnan of India, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, in pursuit of the $45,000 first prize.

Julie Halard of France upset top-seeded Pam Shriver, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0, in the second round of a $100,000 tournament at Moscow.

In other matches, second-seeded Natalia Zvereva of the Soviet Union defeated Natalie Herreman of France, 6-1, 6-3, and third-seeded Gretchen Magers beat Katrina Adams, 6-3, 7-6.

Ivan Lendl, the world’s top-ranked player, hit 14 aces while scoring a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Leif Shiras in the second round of the $492,500 Australian Indoor at Sydney, Australia.

In other matches, defending champion and fifth-seeded Slobodan Zivojinovic of Yugoslavia got past West German qualifier Alexander Mronz, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4; Swedish-born Australian teen-ager Johan Anderson beat West German Christian Saceanu, 6-1, 6-3; Mark Woodforde beat Richard Fromberg in a match of Australians, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3; Niclas Kroon of Sweden beat Darren Cahill of Australia, 6-0, 6-4, and Australian teen-ager Jason Stoltenberg defeated Mark Kratzmann, also of Australia, 6-7 (7-0), 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

Defending champion Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia overpowered Andres Gomez of Ecuador, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round of the Hong Kong Championships.

The match was halted for 2 1/2 hours because of a steady rain, which forced postponement of four first-round matches.

In another match, Michael Chang was leading compatriot Robert Van’t Hof, 5-2, when the first set was stopped by rain.
