Share

The South Orange County Chamber of Commerce has endorsed five of the 23 candidates running for the City Council of the proposed new city of Laguna Niguel.

Community residents on Nov. 7 will vote both on cityhood and for a slate of council members. The five-member proposed council would come into being only if a majority of those voting also cast ballots in favor of Laguna Niguel cityhood.

Candidates endorsed by the South County chamber are Patricia C. Bates, James F. Krembas, Larry Porter, Richard Steinhoff and Thomas W. Wilson. Bates, Krembas and Porter are directors of the Laguna Niguel Community Services District, and all three are past presidents of the Laguna Niguel Community Council.

Steinhoff and Wilson are members of the Laguna Niguel Community Council, and Wilson is the current president of that group.

The endorsements were jointly made by the chamber and by its political action committee.

Committee chairwoman Barbara Vaughan said the chamber invited all 23 candidates for interviews, and 15 accepted. The endorsements stemmed from those interviews.

“In a field of outstanding candidates, these proven community leaders are exceptional for their thorough knowledge of local affairs and their ability to handle the complexities of new city government,” Vaughan said.
