SAN DIEGO SPORTS ET CETERA - UCSD Women Win With 11th Shutout

The UC San Diego women’s soccer team scored its 11th shutout Friday, defeating Azusa Pacific, 4-0. UCSD (11-0) has outscored its opponents, 55-0. Heather Mauro scored two goals for UCSD, and Toni Krumme and Felicia Faro each scored one. Azusa Pacific dropped to 7-4.

MEN’S SOCCER

In its West Coast Conference opener at Portland, the University of San Diego managed just seven shots off the defending conference champions and were defeated, 1-0. Yari Allnut, a freshman from USDHS, scored the lone goal for No. 13 Portland (12-1-2, 2-0). No. 18 USD fell to 11-3, 0-1.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC San Diego was defeated by visiting William and Mary, 15-10, 15-12, 15-8. William and Mary (15-2) was led by sophomore Jennifer Torns, a Mt. Carmel graduate, who had 18 kills. Diana Klintworth had 15 kills for UCSD (15-10).

Point Loma Nazarene College defeated Christ College Irvine, 15-1, 19-17, 18-16, in Irvine. Lynette Campbell had 14 kills and nine blocks for Point Loma Nazarene (11-5). Janelle Dutton had 10 kills and six blocks for the Crusaders.

San Diego State improved to 12-11 and 2-5 in the Big West by defeating UC Irvine, 15-4, 15-17, 15-1, 14-16, 15-8, at Peterson Gym. Aztec kill leaders were Jennifer Miller, 20, Amy Erben, 17 and Angela Martin, 16.

Irvine is now 12-6 and 3-4.

Loyola Marymount defeated the University of San Diego, 10-15, 15-6, 15-7, 15-13, in a West Coast Conference match at USD. Kelly Logsdon and Heather Dalley led the Toreras with eight kills.

WATER POLO

UC San Diego collected victories in both of its games at UCSD. In its second game, UCSD, 12-10 and ranked eighth in the NCAA open division, defeated Cal State Los Angeles, 13-3. Pete McConville and Jason Brown each had four goals for UCSD. Cal State Los Angeles dropped to 11-6. In the first game, UCSD defeated Chaminade (Hawaii), 17-4. Chaminade dropped to 5-5.

After tying Crawford High School’s 46-consecutive game streak against San Diego Section schools Tuesday, the Coronado water polo team was defeated by USDHS, 9-7. Coronado defeated Point Loma, 39-1, Tuesday to tie the record set in 1969-1972.

BASEBALL

A survey by Runzheimer International ranked the Padres the fourth-cheapest among the 26 major league teams in cost of attending a game. The survey included the cost of one lowest-priced seat, a hot dog, peanuts, a soda, a beer and parking.

The cost at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium was $12.50. The most expensive was the Chicago’s Wrigley Field at $22, the least expensive Cincinnati’s Riverfront Stadium at $11.75.
