PLNC Men Win Cross Country Championship

Led by Goshu Tadese’s fourth consecutive first-place finish, the Point Loma Nazarene men’s cross country team won its second straight Golden State Athletic Conference championship Saturday at Morley Field.

Point Loma had 19 points to second-place Westmont’s 55 in the GSAC championships.

Tadese, a sophomore from Crawford High, crossed the finish line with teammates Gus Arce and Rick Penman close behind him. Tadese ran the 8,000-meter course in 26:23, Arce and Penman in 26:39. Point Loma’s Sean O’Hara was sixth in 26:58 and teammate J.K. Strandberg was eighth in 27:29.

The Point Loma Nazarene women’s team took third place in the Golden State Athletic Conference meet with 72 points. Westmont won with 38 points, and Azusa Pacific was second with 44 points.

Annette Ronnerman led the Crusaders with a sixth place-finish in 19:31.

The University of San Diego women’s team finished second in the San Diego Invitational with 37 points to Biola’s 33. The USD men’s team took fourth with 94 points.

UCSD’s Denise McFayden had the fastest time of the day in the women’s race at the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Invitational. She covered the 5,000-meters in 17:55, ahead of teammate Michelle Conlay, who was second in 17:59. San Luis Obispo edged the Tritons in team standings by one point, 128-129. U.S. International was ninth (344).

Ken Flint of SDSU (25:05) was second in the five-mile men’s race. UCSD’s team finished fourth.

SOCCER

Point Loma Nazarene won its first GSAC game, over visiting Fresno Pacific, 4-0. Point Loma (4-4-4, 1-1-1) got two goals from Jesse Denney, a senior from Point Loma High, and two assists from Mark Vogel. Jim Novak and Carlos Menezes scored PLNC’s other two goals.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Point Loma Nazarene improved its GSAC record to 5-3 with a 15-5, 15-7, 15-10 victory over visiting Southern California College. Jamie Wheat led PLNC (12-5) with 10 kills, and Lynette Campbell had nine.

William and Mary defeated host USIU, 15-8, 16-14, 15-10, in a nonconference game. Heather Kelley had 19 kills for the Gulls (3-10). William & Mary improved to 16-2.

Tami Seidenberg had 11 kills for Pepperdine as the visiting Waves defeated USD, 15-4, 15-4, 15-2. The Toreras dropped to 1-15, 0-5. Pepperdine is 12-5, 7-0.

CS Long Beach defeated the Aztecs, 15-10, 10-15, 15-12, 15-2 in a Big West game in Long Beach. Amy Erben had 13 kills for SDSU and Angela Martin had 10. The Aztecs dropped to 12-12, 2-6.

BASKETBALL

Former SDSU center Mitch McMullen scored five points and grabbed four rebounds in eight minutes in his professional debut for the Atlanta Hawks. Atlanta defeated the Dallas Mavericks, 123-81, in an NBA exhibition game at Memphis, Tenn.
