It’s the Cos: Actor-millionaire Bill Cosby and Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens are teaming to raise funds to keep the doors open at Carver Elementary Academy in a predominantly black neighborhood of Amarillo, Tex. Cosby will appear at a benefit in the Amarillo Civic Center today.

The American Architectural Foundation has launched a campaign to restore a building known as the Octagon, where President James Madison resided for six months after British troops burned the White House in 1814 and where he signed the treaty that ended the War of 1812. Foundation president Norman L. Koonce said his group wants to raise $2.5 million to refurbish the brick building located on York Avenue two blocks west of the White House.

Debbye Turner, Miss America 1990, will visit Los Angeles today and Tuesday. Turner, a 5-foot-7 veterinary student from the University of Missouri, will appear on television shows, meet Mayor Tom Bradley and record a public-service announcement for the United Negro College Fund.
