A cross-town rivalry it’s not. In nine tries, USD has never taken a victory from San Diego State.

The word rivalry, however, cropped up last week when the University of San Diego’s Toreros appeared at No. 18 in the nation’s top 20 and the Aztecs were nowhere to be found.

But the Aztecs won’t be playing tonight’s game against USD (7:30, Aztec Bowl) in an attempt to get back into the top 20--the Toreros will be.

The latest poll, out Monday, listed the Aztecs at No. 16, thanks to their 3-2 upset of then-No. 1 UCLA on Wednesday. The Toreros? Well, after two losses, they dropped back into obscurity.

After a slow start, the Aztecs (10-3-1) are on somewhat of a roll, having won six in a row. Sophomore Jeff Betts (eight goals) and junior Eric Wynalda (six) have provided much of the Aztecs’ punch. Goalie Brian Finnerty has recorded six shutouts this season.

USD (11-4) is led by juniors Tom Crane (10 goals) and Leo Ronces (nine).

POLICE BLOTTER

Randy Robinson, a Kearny High graduate, was among two University of Colorado basketball players accused by authorities of assaulting a woman in her dormitory room and arrested for investigation of third-degree sexual assault and false imprisonment, the university announced.

Sophomores Robinson and James Hunter were arrested after a single day of fall basketball practice in connection with the incident that allegedly took place last month.

The two players will remain on the team until the case is resolved, according to a statement released by the university’s sports information office.

“We have to let the courts give the kids their due process,” said basketball Coach Tom Miller. “After the court’s findings and our own department’s internal review, we will at that time take the appropriate action.”

Third-degree sexual assault, which indicates fondling, is a felony if force or threats are used. The crime is punishable by two to eight years in prison.

Robinson scored 440 points two years ago at Kearny, a 19.1 average, 17th best in the county. He averaged 3 points a game at Colorado last year.
