DETROIT — A General Motors Corp. joint venture plant at Fremont, about 30 miles southeast of San Francisco, sustained minor damage in Tuesday’s earthquake, a GM spokesman said today.
GM spokesman John Mueller said the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. plant in Fremont sustained damage such as broken water mains, but early assessments indicate the plant is structurally sound.
“There was minor damage reported, but we may not operate this morning because the plant depends on just-in-time parts delivery,” Mueller said, noting that most workers at the plant had already gone home when the quake struck at 5:04 p.m.
About 2,800 workers at the NUMMI plant build the Chevrolet Geo Prizm and Toyota Corolla subcompact cars.
