The judge in the fraud and tax-evasion trial of Nancy Hoover Hunter told jurors Tuesday that the defense is expected to rest its case by the end of next week.

“You can now see the light at the end of the tunnel,” U.S. District Judge Earl B. Gilliam told jurors. The trial began in March.

After the defense rests, prosecutors will be allowed to present a short rebuttal. After that, the jury will get the case.

Hunter is expected to take the stand on her own behalf sometime this week.

Hunter is being tried on 197 counts of fraud and tax evasion stemming from her role as a top executive with the La Jolla investment firm J. David & Co., which collapsed in February, 1984. Prosecutors allege that Hunter was a knowing partner in the giant J. David fraud, which bilked more than 1,000 people out of $80 million.
