Valentin Mogulini scored a 10 on the pommel horse, helping the Soviet Union to the gold medal in the men’s team competition at the World Gymnastics competition in Stuttgart, West Germany.

East Germany won the silver medal and China took the bronze. The United States and Bulgaria tied for eighth.

“Pressure finally got to them,” U.S. Coach Ed Burch said of his young team.

Kevin Davis was the top U.S. finisher with a 24th place in individual standings.

The Soviet Union had 587.20 points out of a possible 600 to win the title easily, even though two of its biggest stars, Dimitri Bilozerchev and Valeriti Liukin, were not competing.
