Monterey Park : Agency Joins Cleanup Panel

Share

The Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to allow the city’s Department of Water and Power to join an industry-run committee that is cleaning up the Operating Industries Inc. landfill.

The unanimous vote makes the department the only municipal agency on the 82-member committee, which was set up by companies identified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as “potentially responsible” for contamination at the landfill. Between 1977 and 1982, the DWP disposed of 700,000 gallons of oily water at the 190-acre dump, which has been designated a federal Superfund site.

The department will officially join the Operating Industries Landfill Steering Committee next month. City officials said the $49,250 joining fee is a bargain compared to the unknown costs of the department dealing with the EPA on its own.
