A child in El Monte telephoned the 911 emergency line Wednesday to summon help for a woman who had gone into labor. Moments later a police officer arrived and helped the woman deliver a baby girl, authorities said.

Police got a frantic phone call from a child at a home on Humbert Avenue at 4:34 a.m. reporting that a woman was having a baby, police spokesman Tom Hunt said. There were several children in the home at the time and it was not immediately known which child had summoned help or what the relationship was between the caller and the woman.

Officers Gary Antonitis, 31, and Rob McClung Jr., 28, were in the area and arrived within one minute, Hunt said.

“Officer Antonitis, who has assisted in the birth of his own three children, and Officer McClung . . . assisted the mother in giving birth to a healthy baby girl,” Hunt said.

The mother and her new daughter were taken to Greater El Monte Community Hospital in good condition, he said.
